How to Insulate Container Homes

Shipping Container Architecture

The use of steel shipping containers as a building material has grown in popularity in recent years. Containers are inherently strong, widely available, inexpensive, and can be easily modified to fit a wide variety of purposes, including homes, offices, classrooms, artists' workshops, cafés, retail shops, emergency shelters, and even Starbucks stores!

Built from weathering steel (commonly known as CorTen) that resists corrosion, container walls are also corrugated for extra strength and primed and painted with marine-grade paint to protect them from the weather.

Standard containers are either 20-foot or 40-foot long, making them ideal for modular construction. They can be stacked or linked together side-by-side to create larger living or working spaces.

Containers have also become popular in the green building movement because so many of them are piling up at ports around the world and need to be recycled to avoid the energy intensive process of melting down the steel for another use.

The main drawback is that metal is an excellent conductor of heat and cold. The inside of an unfinished steel shipping container can be unbearably hot and humid in during the summer and freezing cold in winter. It is also susceptible to condensation which can cause the steel to rust. You will need a good plan for adding insulation, and InSoFast can help!

The InSoFast Solution

InSoFast CX Container Panels have been engineered specifically for the side walls of most shipping containers and take the hassle out insulating and framing. Their thin profile takes up only two inches of interior space. And most installations can be completed by do-it-yourselfers with a utility knife, glue and a caulk gun.

The 44” x 24” panels fit the width between the weld seams on the long side walls of the container and are set up for an 11-inch repeating pattern of corrugation. They are installed horizontally with the studs running vertically so that the studs adhere to the interior facing ribs of the container.

InSoFast InSerts for side walls, end walls, and ceilings are specifically shaped sleeves of EPS foam that are designed to close up the container’s corrugation air gaps. Once glued in place, the surfaces will be flush and ready for coverage in full InSoFast panels.
