The tiny house movement is a growing trend and a favorite of those who love DIY projects. Many people opt to transform shipping containers into desirable living or working spaces, but it’s important to know how to insulate them properly.
InSoFast, LLC, established in 2006, has engineered EPS foam continuous insulation for the corrugated side walls of shipping containers that are easy to install and thermally stable. The 44” x 24” panels have a thin profile and are just two inches thick, so they take up a minimum of interior space. They are the most cost-effective DIY solution for insulating steel containers.
Why Shipping Containers?
Intermodal shipping containers are designed for transporting cargo around the world on trains, trucks and ships but today they are being used for homes, offices, restaurants, shops and storage. Why? These steel boxes are readily available and are some of the most durable structures in the world.
The standard size of most containers is about 8-feet wide, 8-feet high, and either 20 or 40 feet long. “High cube” containers add an extra foot of height, which can be important once you have used up some space while insulating the interior.
If you’ve dreamed of avoiding the traditional 30-year mortgage, a single 40-foot container will provide you with about 32o square feet of livable space. It will need a solid foundation, and you’ll have to cut holes for and install doors and windows. With the possible exception of welding, you could probably build and completely finish off your container home by yourself.
Containers are inexpensive, eco-friendly, low maintenance, strong and secure, and can be used to create dramatic, sophisticated and beautiful homes, offices, cafés, and store fronts.
Of course, an unfinished steel shipping container can be too hot during summer and freezing cold in winter. It is also susceptible to condensation which can cause the steel to rust. You’ll need a good plan for adding insulation, and InSoFast can help!
The InSoFast Solution
InSoFast CX Container Panels are designed for the side walls of most shipping containers and take the hassle out insulating and framing. Their thin profile takes up only two inches of interior space. One of the biggest benefits is that most installations can be completed by do-it-yourselfers with a utility knife, glue and a caulk gun.
The 44” x 24” panels fit the width between the weld seams on the long side walls of the container and are set up for an 11-inch repeating pattern of corrugation. They are installed horizontally with the studs running vertically to allow the studs to adhere to the interior facing ribs of the container.
InSoFast InSerts for side walls, end walls, and ceiling are specifically shaped sleeves of EPS foam that are designed to close up the container’s corrugation air gaps. Once glued in place, the surfaces will be flush and ready for coverage in full InSoFast panels.
