Insulation and Framing for Container Homes

InSoFast EPS insulation panels are the best type of insulation for shipping container homes. They are ideal for do-it-yourselfers because they are lightweight, can be easily cut and installed on your site, and require no special safety gear to handle.

InSoFast insulation panels are designed for use in commercial-scale energy efficiency projects, but their amazing simplicity has made them popular with homeowners for DIY basement and interior renovations, exterior retrofitting under siding, brick, stone, stucco and other finishes, and for insulating shipping containers.

Why Your Container Home Needs Insulation

It’s necessary to insulate any home for comfortable, energy efficient living, but a steel shipping container home presents some unique challenges:

  • Condensation: An unprotected metal shipping container can feel like a tropical rainforest inside. Like a cold can of beer on a hot day, condensation will occur when warm air comes in contact with the cool metal. Water vapor can travel through traditionally framed walls like water through a screen door in a submarine. And, with moisture comes mold, rust and corrosion.
  • Radiant Heat & Cold: Metal is an excellent conductor of heat and cold. Winter temperatures will turn the metal cold and can make the interior of your container home feel like an ice box. In hot weather, sun rays hitting the steel sheeting will quickly radiate heat into the container, making it unbearably hot and humid.

InSoFast closed-cell EPS foam insulation panels will turn your steel box into a comfortable living or working space. They control moisture, are cost-effective, simple to install, and take up a minimal amount of interior space.

What is EPS?

Expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) is often erroneously called Styrofoam™ but is a closed-cell insulation that is manufactured by “expanding” a polystyrene polymer.

High-density closed-cell foam insulation is stronger and denser and able to carry heavier loads than open-cell foam and is also non-porous, making it difficult for water vapor and air to pass through it. It also provides almost twice the insulating R-value per inch. "R" means resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power.

Our insulation panels are manufactured without any ozone depleting CFCs or HCFCs that could affect the indoor air quality of your container home. The closed cell foam is inert and experiences no physical or chemical breakdown over time.

InSoFast Shipping Container Insulation

InSoFast CX Container Panels are designed specifically for the side walls of most shipping containers, and their thin profile takes up only two inches of interior space. The panels are set up for an 11-inch repeating pattern of the corrugation and the panel size is 44” x 24”. These panels are installed horizontally with the studs running vertically to allow the studs to adhere to the interior facing ribs of the container.

Our end wall and ceiling inserts are specifically shaped sleeves of EPS foam that are designed to close up the container’s corrugation air gaps. Once glued in place, the surfaces will be flush and ready for coverage in full InSoFast panels. Another solution is to utilize InSoFast Side Wall Inserts in conjunction with InSoFast UX 2.0 or InSoFast EX 2.5 panels to achieve maximum insulation and air-tightness.
