How to Insulate Exterior Walls

Cost-effective, weather resistant, fast, and easy to install

Are you a do-it-yourselfer who wants to learn how to insulate exterior walls for your new or retrofit construction project? InSoFast EPS foam insulation is cost-effective, weather resistant, fast and easy to install, and takes the complexity out of exterior continuous insulation.

InSoFast is a style of engineered continuous thermally stable insulation that comes in interlocking panels. The closed-cell, injection-molded EPS foam panels can be applied universally to any interior or exterior wall assembly.

How to Insulate Exterior Walls

InSoFast Exterior Insulation

The InSoFast EXe 2.5 Panel is an R-10 continuous insulation (CI) weather screen assembly that is optimized for exterior usage and maximizes energy efficiency and moisture management. The R-value outperforms traditionally framed R-15 batt walls.

The 2 ½-inch thick EXe 2.5 Panels panels feature dual-sided engineered drainage channels that allow multi-directional air flow and help ensure that no moisture penetrates the wall assembly, providing drain-ability and breathability in a simple easy-to-install system.

InSoFast panels can be installed over your existing weather resistant barrier or house wrap. They serve as a secondary weather resistant barrier that is well-suited to absorptive claddings such as stucco or stone and provide a much-needed capillary break from wood framed walls and sheathing.

When retrofitting an older structure, you won’t have to remove existing wood siding or trim boards and can incapsulate old lead paint siding instead of wasting time, energy and expense on abatement.

InSoFast panels are ideally suited as a drain and dry insulation board for use under traditional stucco and thin-veneer stone applications. The panels utilize tongue and groove edges to provide a smooth continuous insulation substrate and include built-in studs for lath attachment. The InSoFast panel has drainage channels that are flashed to drain bulk water.

Siding can be attached directly to the panel’s embedded stud framing. The polypropylene plastic studs have the same structural strength of 20-gauge steel studs but, unlike metal, do not conduct heat and will not disrupt the home’s thermal protection.

InSoFast panels are designed to incorporate multiple complex architectural functions in a single, hassle-free design. The possibilities are endless in terms of exterior finishing on top of InSoFast panels – siding, stone, stucco, you name it – and “Five Exterior InSoFast Projects You Should See” provides the details of five inspiring exterior projects.
