Building with Shipping Containers

Building with shipping containers is a relatively new construction approach, but the trend is growing. Homeowners use them to build homes of all shapes and sizes to enjoy lower construction and maintenance costs. They can also be used for commercial offices, retail spaces, cafes and store fronts.

Of course, an unfinished steel shipping container can be too hot during summer and freezing cold in winter. It is also susceptible to condensation which can cause the steel to rust. You will need a good plan for adding insulation.

InSoFast high-density closed-cell EPS foam insulation may be your best bet. It is non-porous, making it difficult for water vapor and air to pass through it. It is stronger and denser and able to carry heavier loads than open-cell foam. It also provides almost twice the insulating R-value per inch. "R" means resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power.

About InSoFast Panels & Container InSerts

InSoFast CX Container Panels are specifically designed for the side walls of most shipping containers. Their thin profile takes up only two inches of interior space. The panels are set up for an 11-inch repeating pattern of the corrugation and the panel size is 44” x 24”. These panels are installed horizontally with the studs running vertically to allow the studs to adhere to the ribs of the container.

The features of our CX Container Panels and Inserts include:

  • R-11 wall panel
  • Built in framing
  • Integrated composite studs
  • Built in electrical raceways
  • Continuous insulation
  • No special tools required
  • Solid backing for drywall
  • Save space, time and energy
  • Universal insulation for floor, walls, ceilings, interior and exterior

Our end wall and ceiling inserts are specifically shaped sleeves of EPS foam that are designed to close up the container’s corrugation air gaps. Once glued in place with PL Premium 3X Construction Adhesive, the surfaces will be flush and ready for coverage in full InSoFast panels. Another excellent option is to utilize InSoFast Side Wall Inserts in conjunction with InSoFast UX 2.0 or InSoFast EX 2.5 panels to achieve maximum insulation and air-tightness.

InSoFast has insulation kits available for 20-foot and 40-foot containers with either standard 8-foot or high cube 9-foot ceilings, or call us for custom configurations.
